GREETINGS FROM CAMDEN, TENNESSEE.
I WOKE UP IN MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS AND WENT TO SLEEP IN CAMDEN, TENNESSSEE. THIS IS WHAT TRANSPIRED TODAY.
PEOPLE/STRATEGY/TRAVEL NEWS
The Objective
I love traveling in Wisconsin. I was most looking forward to trackchasing all weekend in the Badger state. The weather was forecasted to be perfect. Wisconsin was where I drank my first legal 3.2 beer. Following my first year in college, I was with Bernie Sandlin, a high school friend on the way to Wisconsin when we drove by the Downers Grove, Illinois freeway exit. I told Bernie I was going to marry a girl from Downers Grove whom I had seen during my freshman year. I had never met this girl, but I knew I would marry her and I did!
“Wait just a minute, Randy”, the loyal Trackchaser Report reader might be saying right now. “It’s all very nice to now that you drank a beer in Wisconsin and married your college sweetheart, but what in the whole wide world does this information have to do with THE OBJECTIVE?”
Well, this all goes back to a conversation I had with trackchaser Mike Knappenberger in Kansas a few weeks ago. Mike is a good friend of fellow trackchaser Gordon Killian. I told Mike that Gordon was a very tough competitor in the lifetime National Geographic Diversity competition. Mike looked at me and said something to the effect, “He (Gordon) says he doesn’t focus on that. It’s not important to him”.
As Mike gave me this information, I let out a sigh of relief and my heart began to warm. At the same time, I could only see dollar signs! If Gordon weren’t chasing NGD points, then I wouldn’t have to chase NGD points. If I didn’t have to travel all over God’s green acres chasing those valuable NGD points, I could save a good deal of money.
If I could save some money, the Lewis family could have a Christmas. Yes, we could have a real Christmas. With all of the money I spend on trackchasing, you can imagine there isn’t much left over for presents for the kids. You might also imagine three little Lewis children all bright eyed and bushy tailed huddled around a scraggly Christmas tree hoping to get a special gift from Santa only to be disappointed.
The TR reader who follows these reports in detail might say, “Randy, hold on just a minute! Aren’t your kids ages 32, 31 and 28? Isn’t it more than a stretch that the National Geographic Diversity program has any impact on the quantity and quality of Christmas gifts for your adult children?” O.K.! O.K.! I’m speaking metaphorically. However, if Gordon Killian wasn’t interested in going after NGD points, life would be a lot easier for me.
Then someone forwarded an email from Gordon to me. Oh, I wish people wouldn’t do that. You see I get a lot of emails each year. Because of the quantity of emails I receive, I’ve had to block some addresses from getting any emails to me. Gordon’s address is one of those that had to be blocked. It’s nothing personal, but the “cut” had to be made somewhere.
Nevertheless, the email that was sent to me told of Gordon going trackchasing in New Mexico. Now hold on a minute! Why would a man who was past middle age (Gordon) travel all the way from Eastern Pennsylvania to one of the least visited trackchasing locales, New Mexico?
Could it be that Gordon stood to gain more National Geographic Diversity points from a brief visit to New Mexico than any other of the 50 United States. Could it be that Gordon ranked outside the top 10 in New Mexico (15 NGD points) before he went there and after seeing two tracks there now ranks in 6th place (a gain of 9 NGD position points)? I would only offer this comment to Mr. Knappenberger, “If it walks like a duck and smells like a duck and looks like a duck, then it’s a duck!”
As this report was going to press, I was going to have to report that Mr. Killian had passed me up in the battle for the lifetime NGD points title. Then, as if by divine intervention, I noticed that Nancy Brown had just seen a new track in Oregon. This moved Gordon down a notch in the Beaver state and added a point to his NGD score.
Then I noticed the racing Eckels had just posted a track report from a recent visit to Tennessee. At first, I thought Gordon had sent them down there to keep me out of the top 10. I thought after seeing tonight’s race at the Camden Speedway I was just one track away from cracking the top 10, but now I trail the Eckels and Roger Ferrell by TWO tracks and a top 10 position. However, there was good news in the Eckels visit to Tennessee. The track they saw gave them 17 Tennessee tracks. This pushed Mr. Killian and his 16 tracks out of a tie for 9th place and completely out of the top 10 here.
The above clearly shows that this competition is not simply between two trackchasing competitors. There are another 60 trackchasers or so, who influence the NGD positions of other trackchasers whenever they see a race in the U.S.
I currently lead the lifetime NGD results by just two state positions. This is going to be one of the tightest races in the five-year history of the National Geographic Diversity rankings. Mr. Killian has easy scores awaiting him in Utah and Georgia. The Utah season is about over. There is still plenty of time for him to go to Georgia since he seems so interested in gaining NGD points. I don’t normally like to ask Guy Smith for favors, but………..”Guy, if you could make a quick trip down to Kentucky and see two new tracks, that would push Gordon out of Kentucky’s top 10 and increase his NGD score. Do you think I can count on you to do that?” Of course, I will never know what Guy’s response to my question was, since I had to block his email address as well. However, if Guy adds two new Kentucky tracks I will consider unblocking his address.
Nevertheless, I hope I had not somehow pissed off Mr. Killian. During the same evening in Kansas, Mr. Killian had dropped by my seat location to say hello. I introduced him to my newfound Kansas seatmates. They asked if I traveled much with Mr. Killian. I told the fans that I tried to avoid Mr. Killian whenever I could. They seemed surprised. Of course, with most humorous comments, there is usually a grain of truth involved.
Actually, there are several reasons why I might feel that way. I can’t go into all of them right now. If you need at least one of those reasons, I give you this. Gordon is a big fellow. I’m a big fellow. There probably isn’t enough room in the grandstand for both of us. I’ll just leave it at that. By the way, I think it’s every Americans right to hang out with the people they want too.
Nevertheless, if Gordon is to be aggressively seeking NGD points, then I will have to do the same. I have no points to gain by trackchasing in Wisconsin. I would have to change this weekend’s plan. One of the states where I stand to gain the most in the NGD contest is Tennessee.
This all dawned on me at 11 a.m. on Friday as I was checking out of my motel in Monmouth, Illinois. I had to think fast. The weather was going to be beautiful in Wisconsin this week. Too bad, I wouldn’t be there now. I was going to Tennessee!
The weather in Tennessee didn’t look that good. It was going to be a minimum of 500 miles to drive down there over the next eight hours. I had to get going. THE OBJECTIVE had changed. I was off to Tennessee.
The Trip
I drove nearly 500 miles after I left my Illinois motel room. The weather all along the way was very unsettled. It rained a good deal during this trip. I had time for one 12-minute power nap, a gas fill-up and a rest area stop where I tapped into the internet to check on possible tracks to visit.
My trip did take me through my hometown of East Peoria, Illinois. Of course, that meant a lunchtime Davis Bros. supreme pizza to go. I ate on that pizza for the next three hours. It was good!
I had three tracks in my database that were expected to race on Friday nights in Tennessee. I called the Macon County Raceway in Lafayette. The promoter told me they had been closed since early August. It seems they couldn’t buy water for the track. The drought has been so bad in their area, there is not enough water available to water the track’s surface.
Then I called the Cookeville Speedway in Baxter. This track is now closed and it’s for sale! There is no racing there now. The promoter told me he couldn’t get enough cars to come to his track.
This left me with the Camden Speedway. They told me they were racing. There was just one problem. The weather radar looked terrible in their area. The worst of the rain appeared to be zeroing in directly on the Camden area. During the last 75 miles of my drive toward Camden it rained nearly the entire way. There were large rain puddles everywhere I looked.
Only during the last 15 miles of my 492-mile drive did the rain stop. It looked like it had not rained here at all. Amazing! This would be the third consecutive night, that really should have been rained out, but wasn’t. I don’t know why I’m so lucky, but I am.
The People
Tonight, the track announcer came out during intermission and interviewed me as we stood in the grandstand. There were only about 150 people here tonight, so it was pretty easy for folks to see who the trackchaser was.
During the interview, the announcer told me about a track running tomorrow night where he announced. When I went back to my seat fans from three different locations mentioned tracks that I should consider for tomorrow night.
Obviously, these people were well meaning. However, they did not understand the intricacies of the National Geographic Diversity contest. I appreciated their help, but I did not have time to explain why the NGD program would force me to a track outside of their locale.
STATE RANKINGS
This was my 15th lifetime track in the Volunteer state. I am now tied with Kenny Schrader for 12th place here. I’m two tracks away from cracking the top 10. Any guesses when I might return to Tennessee to trackchase. John Moore has a comfortable lead in the state with 54 lifetime tracks.
RACE REVIEW
CAMDEN SPEEDWAY, CAMDEN, TENNESSEE – TRACKS #1,270
The Camden track was much better than I thought it would be. Believe it or not, but I rarely even look at what type of track I will be seeing when I make my plan. It’s not unusual for me to not even know if I will be seeing a dirt track or an asphalt track. This is not information I need to know in order to make my plan.
Carol will often ask me what day it is. I usually don’t know and I usually don’t care. What different does it make if it’s Tuesday or Friday or any particular day of the week. When you’re retired every day is Saturday and every night is Friday night. If I needed to know what day it was, I would.
The Camden Speedway is a nearly half-mile long high banked dirt oval with wide sweeping turns. The pit area is located outside of the track beyond turns three and four on a hillside.
It was dark when I arrived. For some odd reason, they didn’t put any cars on the track until 8:20 p.m., some twenty minutes after the scheduled start of racing. The track looked fine. I thought it could rain at any minute. I had just driven nearly 500 miles. I did NOT want to get rained out at this point.
At 8:20 p.m., the modifieds came out onto the track. Great! Track #1,270 was going to be in the books in just a moment. However, I soon learned they were coming out for hot laps, a non-countable trackchasing activity. I hung in there for a few minutes more until the first countable race of the evening did run. Now I could breathe a collective sigh of relief.
The car counts were small. There were four countable racing divisions. The modifieds had the most with ten cars. They ran two heats and every other class ran just one. There were only two yellow flags all night during all of the heats and all of the features. One was for a blown engine and the other was on the last lap of the hobby stock feature where two drivers had battled side by side for the entire race.
I was told this track was built just five or six years ago. They had a huge grandstand that can seat more than 3,000 people. Tennessee tracks have been having a hard time staying in business. They don’t really have any “novelty” racing on temporary tracks here. There are very few road courses or anything other than your hardcore basic oval tracks.
I’m not sure why I don’t have many tracks in this state, but I intend to get more. You’ll probably see me in the Volunteer state again in the not to distant future.
